Planning Meeting for RED CROSS RIDE

Hello everyone.

We are starting to plan the 2011 Red Cross Ride. Last year the race was in May and though we had about 113 riders, it probably suffered in attendance because of other events held at that time. Therefore, we are looking to move the event to October and make it a season 'ending' event rather than an 'early' season riding event.

The first planning meeting is tomorrow, February 1, 2011 at 5:15 at the Red Cross offices at 326 South Franklin Street in downtown Rocky Mount. Parking is behind the building.

It would be great to have a big turnout for this initial meeting. I do not anticipate doing any sort of task designation at this point, just ideas. I think the more minds collected to play devil's advocate or to think of creative additions, the better. I do not anticipate the meeting taking a long time. I would like to be done within an hour and I will do my best to keep that timeline.

Please come out to throw in your two cents if you can.

Thanks.

Eric

RUN RSVP: Saturday, 1/29 at 7:00 a.m.

Hope that everyone's running and training is going well.  Here's what is planned for the weekend group run.

Please comment if you are coming; even if you are starting early or coming late.  It makes a BIG difference to motivate other runners and encourages more to come out.  Slow or fast. . . comment if you are coming. Margaret signed up to put out fluids at the tracks for us this week.  Thank you Margaret!

I'm repeating the same route we did a couple weeks ago.  It is full of dead ends.  In total it 13.4 miles, but it can be easily adjusted to any distance you prefer just by removing the out-and-back sections.  This route guarantees you will see lots of each other on the run.  REVIEW THE ROUTE so you know what you plan to do. Happy running!

Bored, injured, or just want to try something new?

Submitted by: David Lavely

Give the Harrison YMCA Masters Swim Program a try. Yvonne, Mary, and Margaret will whip you into swim shape in no time. At a meager $15 per month for Y members, you can’t beat the price (auto-withdrawal option is available). Here are some common swim technique flaws and solutions the coaches will use to make you more efficient in the water. . .
  • Problem: Straight arm recovery
  • Solution/Drill: Finger tip drag
  • Problem: Weak kick
  • Solution/Drill: Point toes, shorten kick length, increase cadence
  • Problem: Wiggling hips
  • Solution/Drill: 3-6-3 drill (six kicks on one side, three strokes, six kicks on other side)
  • Problem: Sinking hips
  • Solution/Drill: Lower head position in water
If you want to swim like this - www.swimsmooth.com - spend some time with the Harrison YMCA Masters Swim Program. Sessions last one hour and are currently held at 6 a.m. Monday and Wednesday, as well as noon on Tuesday and Thursday.

RUN RSVP: Saturday, 1/22

Come out to run with the club tomorrow morning.  It's going to be cold so please dress appropriately. Hope to see a great crowd out there in the morning.

Run Details:
  • Where: Saturday, 7:00 am @ Harris Teeter
  • Supported: yes, at the tracks
  • WeatherForecast
  • Routes:  6.67 Loop Route
Remember, even though it is cold, you still need fluids.  You will not sweat out as much as you do in the summer, but it is still important to stay healthy.  Bring gloves and a hat to keep your warm!  Happy running!

2011 RMEC Blog and Group Runs

Hello RMEC Members. Thank you all for becoming a member for the 2011 calendar year. Some of you are founding members, and others are brand new to the group. Regardless of you years running or ability level, we are excited to have you in the club.

Two of the core strengths of our club is our Saturday group runs, and the RMEC blog. These to club benefits gives us a chance to interact both face-to-face and online. Both of these also take some time to manage. As you know, we are a non-profit organization, and no one from the club benefits financially. Anything you see the RMEC do is all volunteer based. Even our club races (Medoc Trail Races and The Golf Club at Rocky Mount Races) give proceeds to the designated beneficiaries, and do not create profit for any individuals.

I am as passionate about the RMEC as I am about running in general. That being said, family obligations and work prevent me from pouring all of my extra time into the club. With this email I am requesting some volunteer help from our members in two keys areas:

Weekend Runs:

I would like to have members pick a weekend or two during the year to coordinate the group run. This would mean you would put the fluids out, help to pick a route, and clean up the fluid stop. Even if you just want to handle the fluids that is still a big help. I can put all of the details on the blog for people to RSVP. We will reimburse you for any fluids and cups you buy. Just get you receipt to Scott.

You are not required to do this, but it would be very appreciated. So on the blog, please comment which weekend you will be the long-run-host. I will create a summary of the weekends once everyone comments.

RMEC Blog:

When the blog was created in 2006, it was used to providing tips and plans for 20 people training to run the Richmond Marathon. We evolved into a running club, and the blog evolved into a way for us to motivate, encourage, and update our club (and the community) on running activities. With over 1,200 blog posts, and 118,000 page views, I know that our page is used by many.

I try to share updates whenever possible, but have limited time to dedicate to it. I still like to share tips and advice when I can find them, and I really enjoy sharing our race results, and race reports. Let's face it, I am not that interesting, so when we have a chance to hear things from other runners, in their words, people enjoy it. Some of the most popular posts have been things written by RMEC members. . . not me.

There are three ways you can help:
  • Write something: It can be anything. It can be tips, a funny story, motivational, something you read online, a good running video, a great deal on running gear, etc.. People come to our site for information and motivation. The more activity we get, the better.  You don't have to be an expert runner, and you don't have to be a writer.
  • Race Reports: I love reading your race reports. This is my favorite thing on the blog. These can be one paragraph, or five pages. We just want something in your words. If you ran 50:00 in your first 5k, or if you just qualified for Boston again, people like to know. If you think you are too new or too slow to write about your experience, you are wrong. Your story might be catalyst to motivate someone else to start running. If you think you are too fast to write because people will think you are bragging, you are wrong too. We are a very supportive group, and like to celebrate your accomplishments.
  • Race Results: I try to post race results when I can. I admit, I probably miss half of what everyone is doing. If you ever really pay attention to what I write, it is essentially me scanning the results and awards and putting it into written form. It might seem silly, but once again we are club that supports each other, so anytime I can recognize a performance (good or bad) I try to do it. If you would ever like to help with this, or you know of a race with several RMEC runners, please feel free to write a brief race recap.
If you want anything on the blog, just email runrmec@yahoo.com, As long as it is running, biking, or swimming related, I will have it posted. I do not post advertisements, or non-exercise topics to the blog. If your step daughter is selling cookies to raise money so she can save baby seals stranded in Nebraska that is wonderful. . . but it does not belong on the blog.  So please, help keep our blog active and share with us!

Weekend Runs

If you would like to help host a weekend run, please post a comment below.  Hosting means at a minimum you provide the fluids for the run.  You are also welcome to plan the routes too.  They don't always have to start from the Teeter.  We have run from Battleboro, City Lake, parks, and the YMCA at times.

RUN RSVP: 01/15 @ 7:00 am

Who is ready for spring?  Another cold run is planned for this weekend.  I was the start time at 7:00 am.  I know some of you like to run earlier, and others start later in the morning.  This time seems to be a good compromise.  If you want to start earlier, you can run to the Teeter, or just meet back there are 7:00 to join the group.

Once again, please, comment if you are coming.  Even if you are starting early or coming late.  It makes a BIG difference to motivate other runners and encourages more to come out.  Slow or fast. . . comment if you are coming.

Regarding fluids, the plan is to have them at the tracks and also at Co-Ah-Bar.  If you can help with either location, please post a comment and save your receipt.

RUN RSVP: 01/08 @ 7:00 am

Hope that everyone has started 2011 off on the right foot and is getting in their miles.  With so many people racing this spring, it is critical that you don't start out behind.  Also, don't forget to log your runs so you can keep track for 2011.

Please, comment if you are coming.  Even if you are starting early or coming late.  It makes a BIG difference to motivate other runners and encourages more to come out.  Slow or fast. . . comment if you are coming.

I picked an old route full of dead ends.  In total it 13.4 miles, but it can be easily adjusted to any distance you prefer just by removing the out-and-back sections.  This route guarantees you will see lots of each other on the run.  REVIEW THE ROUTE so you know what you plan to do.

Do You Want to Run a Relay Race?

The RMEC had a 6-man team run the Blue Ridge Relay this past September.  Next April we will have three Ultra-Teams run the American Odyssey Relay. This is a video that sums up the experience. . .

There is still time to join in.  Get 6-12 friends and join us in April.  I seriously doubt we will ever get three teams to sign up again for a relay.  There will be other relays, but this is probably your only chance to do it with a group of this size from the RMEC.
