Discussions have begun about creating a Triathlon Training Team in a partnership with the YMCA. Our meeting had to be rescheduled, but I assure you there are plans in the works. I do not have any details right now, but my assumption is the team would be something like the following:
- Provide a training plan for athletes to follow
- Offer regular YMCA classes that would focus on Tri-specific workouts (inside the Y)
- Have weekly organized runs, and rides (outside the Y)
- Have clinics on various topics (Tri Rules, Proper Gear, Swim Techniques, Tire Changing, etc.)
There are lots of other things that could be part of the program, but the items above are probably a minimum. Until I meet with Angela and Mary at the YMCA, I don't know what that have planned. We need to discuss which event, if there is a cost, liability, what plan, how to handle Sprint Triathletes and Half Ironman Triathletes, etc.
If I had to guess, we may select White Lake as the Tri of choice. It is an open water swim, but in a clear and normally calm lake. It is a very popular race, and can fill up in just a few hours for the sprint. As Kinnie has posted below, hotels are not plentiful at White Lake, so if you are considering the event, you may want to start booking rooms.
At this point I want to find out, who is at least interested in being a part of a team like this?
Patti Miller--sprint
ReplyDeleteJeff Miller --half ironman
Kinnie Pruden--? I'm in, I just haven't decided which one; most likely the sprint as ailing parents and in-laws has been leaving me little "me" time. However, I would still be interested in doing the bike portion of the relay on Saturday, then the sprint on Sunday. If anyone is interested in the relay and needs a female biker let me know.
ReplyDeleteI have booked 5 rooms and have 2 left if anyone is interested. It would be great if we could all stay at the same place.
BTW for Jeff, Michael, Dave, Andy, Lilley, Ryan , Scott etc. there is a cottage that sleeps 18. Caveat: only 1.5 baths. I think it suits you guys perfectly!
Kinnie
I'd be interested. But, my bike is from the "Mod Squad" era. I'll be pricing new ones soon.
ReplyDeleteI think the Tri thing is great, however, I dont wish for any additional cost to my montly surcharge at the Y. I already have a considerable amount going to them in ADDITION to my montly dues. I would hope that it c ould be incorportated into the classes that are already offered with an "emphasis on Tri training" I may be completely off base, but I already pay enough to them at this point and would hope the cost for this would be minimal at the most. At the rate Im going with my kids in all their activities, I may need to get a job there instead of the hospital!!
ReplyDeleteIm interested in the sprint as well as a realy team if someone will have me for either the bike or run portion. Swimming is not my strongest thing...
Tracy
Just to clarify, the Y has not said anything about cost. I added that comment because I was not sure what they had planned.
ReplyDeleteI assume it will depend on what is included. For example, if runs and rides are supported with fluids, gels, etc. there could be cost involved. Likewise that may be something that people do not want supplied.
Another key piece will be liability. The Y obviously has insurance, but if we have a team that has runs and especially bike rides off of the YMCA property, there may be concern over their coverage. Again, this would be for the Y to determine, but these were items I was not sure about.
I am meeting with Angela next week, so if anyone has suggestions of what they are looking for please post here, or shoot me an email.
Again, at this point this idea is exactly that. . . just an "idea".
Thanks!
We bike ride from there all the time. I know you didnt say anything about cost, but I know everytime they add a "specialty" thing, it adds a cost. When you do meet with her, could you please talk about the cost or option of no cost added. I paid for "Masters Swim Program" several months in a row and were never guarunteed an instructor and when one didn't show up, they just wrote the workout on a board and it was up to you to do it. That is not what I thought I was paying for. Mike was great, when HE was there, but when no one was there, there was no instruction. Im just whining as you can see, but I really dont want to add anything else to my monthly bill at the Y, but I want to be able to still workout with the same group Ive been working out with all along and not feel left out because Im not paying for the TRI group. I know you never did that with the Richmond training group, but the Y has different rules. We ran into that clearly when Val was around and we were working out with her. They didnt like it and told her that they didnt like it.
ReplyDeletemichael--- i echo tracy h's comments about the tri and the Y....cliff
ReplyDeleteI am interested but not sure that the timing is good for me. Also, I would need to find a relatively in-expensive bike (my college mountain bike is not up to the challenge!). I hate to spend a bunch of money on one only to find out it is not what I really want to do.
ReplyDeleteThe Y just sent notice that they are going up on there fees again too starting in January! More money more money more money!
ReplyDeletePlease keep giving feedback so I can come with suggestions and ideas when I meet with Angela.
ReplyDeleteI understand cost (if any) is an issue. Are there other topics that I should address? Are there other recommendations?
Michael,
ReplyDeleteI'd love to talk with you re. the Y's "involvement." May be too much to discuss on this blog. I have some ideas however. And hopefully we can work something out with the Y so that they could work with us, or make certain needed things available to us at no additional cost (other than our normal membership dues).
Also, I hope to start shopping for a new bike within the next month. When I buy new I will be looking to sell me bike. It is a Trek tri bike, alloy frame, 56 cm, $1,000.00. More details upon request.
Kinnie
