Duke Liver Tri Course Pre Ride: June 24th

I am planning to ride the Duke Liver Center Half Ironman course again on the morning of June 24th. Anyone who is planning to ride in the Tri in September is welcome to join me. Here is a link to view the course:

I rode it for the first time last month. My plan is to get a relatively early start from Rocky Mount (6 to 6:30AM). It is about an 80 mile ride to the overlook, about an hour and 15 minutes. There are public facilities. I would anticipate the ride to take around 3 hours depending upon the group speed etc. I have the ability to carry up to 8 people and bikes, but I think 6 would be more comfortable for all involved. I would like to be back in RM by 1PM.
Please let me know if you are interested. - Eric Seale

If any runners are interested in checking out the 13.1 mile course, we could arrange that as well. This course is on packed gravel, so it may be worth a trip to see what you are getting yourself into.

Wow! What a strong guy. Carrying that many people is impressive.

On a more serious note, I would like to join you.

  3. Never indicated the size of the 'people'...maybe just 'little people'as they don't weigh as much.
Also, has anyone else noted on the site that the runners get all the perks and the swimmers and cyclists get nuttin'. While cycling, you get three aid stations at 20, 35 and 45 that ONLY have water....that's it. The runners have 4 stops (per lap - 2 laps), but as the course doubles back, they are never more than 9/10's of a mile from an aid station. Their pampered existence will have * Water* Cytomax* Flat cola* HammerGel* E-Caps* Oranges* Salty Snack* Energy Bars* Ice* Cold Towels* First Aid Kit* Port-A-Let. I guess we have to find a tree.

As much as we would love to go to Raleigh and run/bike we will be out of town in DC that weekend.

  6. Patti...I thought flat cola was what runners lived for? I sure do! It ranks right up there with Tang.

And warm Hammergel!!!!! What's the saying, "Don't knock it, 'til you've tried it." Or maybe that was about something else?

I'd love to go to Raliegh to ride on that Saturday. I'll try my darndest to work it out.

Eric, Since you've been over by the course previously, did you happen to spy hotel options? Has anyone checked that out yet? Maybe we can do that (or I could do that) after this ride.

    Regarding hotels. . .

Kinnie and/or Eric, please check in to this. We honestly should be able to swing a group rate considering the numbers we are brining.

I know I could drive up from Rocky Mount race morning, but I would prefer to spend the night there. Plus you have to pick up your race packet that day before, or pick it up at something like 5:30 a.m. the day of.

Truly runners live for the free post race beer!!! Unless your name is Jeff MIller...you live for any kind of food/beverage they put in front of you....at every 9/10 of a mile :)

  11. I did not really look for any hotels on my way in last time. I will see what might be available. One thing that will be a bit of a drag is that the sign in the evening before is at Inside Out sports - which is about a 15 to 20 minute drive from the start point.

Does the whole relay need to be present to pick up the packet??

"Does the whole relay need to be present to pick up the packet??"

According to the website, Yes. However they do not have to all be there at the same time. Individually you have to pick up your own stuff however.

  14. I looked a map and I think I have some ideas on hotels. The easiest way into the tri is down US1. Keeping in mind the check in on the 15th (and the need for food on Saturday night-plenty of restaurants near the hotel...and some are even the sit down type).
I called the following and was given these options for blocking rooms.
All of these are close together on Williams St/US1 in Apex.
Holiday Inn Express : 1006 Marco Lane : has 5 Queen Doubles, 10 Kings and 8 King Execs (you get a sofa) and we could get them at $73 (reg. $84.99).
Days Inn :1400 E Williams St : 10 room minimum (and I had a great deal of trouble understanding everything he said) but I think they have plenty of rooms at this point. $56.99
    Comfort Inn : 1411 E Williams St : 20 queen doubles and 20 kings currently available. $71.
All had continental breakfast. All would be about a 16 mile drive to the start point and a 10 mile drive from Inside Out Sports for check in. Post your thoughts if you are interested in rooms and what you would want (hotel, type of room, occupants etc) and I will block rooms on my card early next week. Unless someone is vehemently opposed to one of the hotel choices, we will go with the majority. Eric

  16. Kinnie,
Any preference on hotel or room type? ie, King, 2 queens etc?
    Eric

I suppose 2 queens in the unlikely event my family decides to come along. Kinnie

Sorry, for some reason I was thinking this was a Saturday a.m. ride. I will not be able to go on Sunday, the 24th. Would anyone care to go the morning of Saturday, the 23rd?
