Train at Medoc Before the Race

Several registered Medoc runners have expressed interest in a training run at Medoc Mountain State Park. This will allow runners to become familiar with the trails before race day. We now have a perfect opportunity for you to do this!

On August 23rd, our own, Frank Lilley (aka Triple F) and Cameron Kelley (Mangum Track Club) will host a trail running event that will utilize essentially the same eight mile loop as the Medoc Trail Races. This is not an organized race, and is not supported with aid stations. Runners must bring their own fluids. It is essentially like any other weekend run you might do. It just happens to be in the park with friends.

You can decide how many loops you choose to run. You can do as little as 8 miles (1 loop) or as much as the 50k (4 loops). This event should not to be confused with the Medoc Trail Races held on 10/04/08.

If you plan to run, you must notify Frank or Cameron in advance and get on the runner list. For more information checkout the Medoc Meltdown 50k site.

This is late notice. . .

A group of us are going to Medoc this afternoon (07/30) to run. So far Michael, Ursula, Patti, Jeff, Frank, Arthur, Dave, and Scott (tentative) are coming.

We are leaving the RBC building at 5:15.

Patti, Frank, Scott, and myself need to spend the first few minutes discussing some race logistics, but we will be running after that, and maybe cooking some hotdogs too.

Brian, plan to join us on 08/23. More details will come up about the RMEC carpooling. If you think that date is good for you, be sure to visit the www.runmedoc.blogspot.com site, and let them know you are coming too.

It is likely that we will do another group run before then too.

Alright, That sounds great! Any weekend. I'm getting bored running 3 mile loops over and over at the middle school x-country course. I'm really excited. My training is in a rut. Just cannot get motivated. This should help.

Are we supposed to be practicing on trails? If so, anyone interested in running trails with me? I could run anywhere from an 8:45 to 9:30 pace depending on distance.

Kinnie, my two cents. . .

I am far from a trail running aficionado, so take this with a grain of salt. The trails at Medoc are easy to moderate for most of the run. Keep in mind however that an "easy" trail is not anything like an "easy" road. Short up and downs, and some sharp turns add to some of the physical challenges, but to me the real difference is the mental aspect.

In trail running you need to think more about your steps. On the roads, you avoid pot holes, and the occasional pine cone. On the trails, you are thinking about every step. This does NOT mean they are always tough steps to take, but it is mentally challenging, because you are always thinking one step ahead.

I think taking some practice on the trail is a good idea. You are used to the road coming at you 25 mph on the bike, so you have a similar process when you ride. Think quick. . . Make a decision. . . Keep going.

We ran there last night and had a blast (minus the snake). The trails are very fun, and the scenery is fantastic. Come out to run on 08/23. I am sure we will find another day as well.

    Couple of comments:

    Thanks for the advice.

Yes, I am used to the road coming at me at 25mph on the bike. Ha!

    Did you say "snake?"

I plan to be there as well, not sure what distance we are running, but I wouldn't mind seeing the whole 10 mile route we plan to run on in the race. How "bout we put together some carpools?????????
