New Twist on Old Debate

Do you stretch before you run?  Do you stretch after your run?  What about in the mornings?  Heck. . . do you stretch at all?

This topic is often brought up in running circles and there are a wide range of opinions.  Most of us struggle to find the time to squeeze in a 30 minute run, so trying to add 10 minutes of stretching on either end of the run is not likely to happen.

Dave found this article on WebMD by Kathleen Doheny.  Take a minute to read through it, and share your thoughts in the comment section below.

Stretch Before Running?  New Twist on Old Debate

As a reminder, I am always looking for good material (fitness related) to post to the blog.  Dave and Frank have contributed several things.  Please feel free to forward me topic.  I especially LOVE race reports.  They can be one paragraph or ten pages.  Just write!

  1. I believe this . . . stretching really doesn't help! I do stretch a little just after some runs (only upper hamstring area). But may go a month without any stretching. And I just rarely have injury problems. (Yea . . . I'm knocking on wood!)

Me too...everytime I stretch I just feel tired. Stretching after spin or during yoga is enough for me...

Myself, I stretch. Especially before a tempo run or speed work. But only after a mile warm up. I think it really allows for a smoother, fuller range of motion for fast paced running. As far as after a run, definitely, especially after a long run.

For me, it's best that my legs simply be warm. I do try to stretch AFTER a run...along with my NSAID of the day.

Note: This information is provided by a person (me) who is often aching in some way, so take with grain of salt.
