Everybody Needs a Goal

REPOSTED TO ENCOURAGE MORE COMMENTS - NEW MEMBERS CAN POST TOO

Frank had sent me an email a few weeks ago with the same subject line as this blog post. I think he is right. As runners, we are always setting goals. It might be about how far to go. . . it might be about how fast to go. . . it might be just about finishing. The bottom line is we all use goals to keep us motivated.

In 2008, Frank pretty publicly set a goal of running the marathon distance 12 times during the year. He came very close to missing his goal when he had to make a trip (or two) to the hospital, but he persevered and still reached his goal. I think we all enjoyed following his progress during the year, and in some cases used it as motivation for our own training.

So, now is the time. . . what is/are your 2009 goal(s)? They can be as general, or as specific as you want them to be. I encourage you to share your goals with the RMEC. Don't be afraid of embarrassment, and don't worry about missing your goal. By sharing it with a large group of motivating friends, I think you will find you are more likely to reach your goal.

Here are some examples (not mine):

  • "I want to run a sub 4:00 marathon"
  • "I want to set a PR at the Flying Pig"
  • "I want to qualify for Boston"
  • "I want to finish my first marathon"
  • "I want to run four days a week"
  • "I want to complete my first triathlon"
  • "I want to join the RMEC and run my first 10k"
  • "I want to catch Medoc"
  • "I want to finish an Ultra"
  • "I want to break 20 minutes in a 5k"
  • "I want to complete a half-ironman"
Give it some thought, and post a reply to this blog entry. You do not have to share your goals, but it would be great to see this post get 30+ comments.

Not totally finished yet . . . but these are in for sure!

    1) Run a 50-miler (maybe not an actual race, due to cutoffs).

    2) Find a least one new RMEC member.

    3) Never finish a marathon in under 5 hours.

Run at least 2 halfs in 2009 and several smaller races

Train using speed and tempo workouts

Run a half under 2:30 and not feel like I'm dying!

  6. 1. Start cross and strength training (something i completely neglected during my training for the FCSB Half)
    2. Set PR at Shamrock Half
    3. Complete first marathon (Flying Pig)
    4. Finish Flying Pig sub 4:00 (this might be a little aggressive, but I think achievable)

That should get me through the first half of the year.

Allow the total joy of athletics to ALWAYS be my guide, not a sheet of paper or a clock or my fear of aging and slowing.
Conquer my fear of competition by giving myself a triathlon "season" of multiple races.
Talk a few RMEC members into coming to my butt kicking kickbox classes

I've presently signed up for the White Lake 1/2 Ironman (May) which I would love to finish in under 6 hours. (My last one took 6 1/2 hours.)

I hope to enjoy the Roanoke (April)and Wilson (June) sprint tri's in the meantime.

And I've signed up for the Beach2Battleship full Ironman (November)-which I just hope to finish. (Any riding, running or swimming buddies are welcome and greatly appreciated.)

  11. Actually enjoy the Tri's I've signed up for : White Lake and Roanoke Valley instead of thinking I was going to drown! Increase cross training instead of running all the time.
Complete another marathon,,,,Im going to have to choose a Fall one instead of the "pig"
Spend more time encouraging my children in their athletics instead of focusing so much on my own accomplishments. They are growing up too fast!!!
