I would like to see the RMEC continue to grow, and to help serve the community by hosting "Fun Runs", creating local road races, and building our own Training Teams much like the Sports Backers did in Richmond (although on a much smaller scale). It would be great to build a training team for the First Carolina State Bank Half Marathon in 2008 for example.
To do this means the RMEC takes on more responsibility and more liability. Even if we don't try to do more things, the liability concern still exists. So here is a look at the those two topics:
Liability: Our group is all people who run, but for the most part we also do things together other than running. . . We are friends. The thought of someone ever getting hurt on a group run is terrible, but something I think about often. What would happen in this situation? Who would be at fault? It is very possible a finger or two might point back at the person who planned the run, mapped the route, and put out the fluids?
Responsibility: I really would like to see Rocky Mount get more road races. I would love to see the Chase get relaunched, and would also like to organize an event that runs through Fords Colony. In addition, Frank and I are working with Medoc State Park to create a trail endurance event. To do these things you need insurance, and you need a tax ID. With these two things in place we can start to work on local events.
So, where am I going with this ramble and what comes next. . . The Road Runner Club of America (RRCA) provides the ability for clubs to incorporate under their organization and obtain 501c(3) status. This means you are a tax exempt organization. There is more to it than that, but that is the basic information. With this in place we must create some basic Bylaws that address our Purpose, Affiliation, Membership, and Finances. As a RRCA member organization we have access to:
- Tax Exempt Status
- Liability Insurance
- Equipment Insurance
- Advice and more
If you go back to my big concerns (liability and responsibility) this solves both. First, we get insured, and secondly we get the ability to plan and execute events.
With the RRCA affiliation there would be dues. Insurance is not free after all. The dues are minimal however and would be determined by the group. My hope would be we could save a few bucks to help pay for cups and fluids for our group runs, but I do not want to create a large reserve fund. The Richmond Road Runners for example charges annually $5 for students, $15 for indivuals, and $20 for families.
I now strongly encourage feedback on this topic. Use the comment feature to post your feelings. Do it anonymously if you prefer, but give your feedback. . . Good or bad. There is a fair amount of work to set something like this up, but once done it really opens our group up to do more. Depending on the feedback received here, we will probably have a RMEC meeting and discuss things like dues, bylaws, and officers.
I look forward to all of your comments. Thanks!
Michael and I have been talking about this for quite a while and it looks like we are coming to a fork in the road . . . either we can continue are we are (small, uninsured, unincorporated) or we can position the club to grow (not necessarily in the sheer number of members, but more what we do).
ReplyDeleteI personally feel like moving in this direction is overdue and I totally support moving towards becoming a true incorporated club, likely associated with the Road Runners Club. I really don't believe the cost would be all that great and the protection it would provide us is significant.
So . . . I would like to see us proceed!

I am in agreement with Frank. I think a $20-$30 per person fee is a small price to pay to be part of a group like this.
ReplyDeleteI also think doing this through an association like the Road Runners Club is beneficial. We could do a lot of this on our own, however it would take a much greater time investment by a lot of people - something we already don't have enough of! Being able to leverage off of them is well worth the fee we would be paying the RRC.
I would like to see us proceed as well.
I am in agreement with everyone else. I think it would benefit us as a team to "offically" organize and would likely grow in bot numbers and in hwat we could do. I know the first place I lloked to find a local running group was RRA website and I am sure others have as well. I fully support the move forward.
ReplyDeleteYes, I agree that this is the next step and we will all benefit from it. It also opens up the opportunity to share the responsibility throughout the group. I look forward to this club's exciting future.

I also support becoming an incorporated club. A fee of $20-$30 is fine with me.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely can see some advantages in going to the next level, however, I do have some unanswered questions which I am sure could be addressed in an informational meeting.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. A $20 annual fee is well worth the benefits of a formal organization in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteI am for moving in this direction and being part of an already formed legal entity. This is the most efficient method and will add longevity to the entity. The fee is very reasonable and I am used to paying $ to get new friends so this will fit right in :)
ReplyDeleteBrad will pay for any scholarships or fringe runners.

100% in favor of the forming of a registered club. For all the hard work Michael has done/does it is a small contribution to make sure that he and other organizers in our group have a level of protection in this day and age of insta-litagation.
ReplyDeleteI kind of like the informality of our group, it makes it seem more like a group of friends rather than an "organization". Im afraid it will get tooo big and too process oriented. However, I do see some benefits to having the backing of an organization. I truly cant imagine anyone suing another person because they fell or got hit, all of us know that we "exercise" at our own risk...
ReplyDeleteI do appreciate all the hard work Michael puts forth on this blog and for the RMEC, without it, most of us would not know each other, we wouldn't have all these great running routes that we can now all run backwards in our sleep, and most of us would have probably never signed up to do most of the races we have done.
Im enetering this as "anonymous" since I seem to be the only person that has a little reservation about changing the way things are...
Differing opinions are welcome, so please continue to share. Let me address a few comments. . .
ReplyDelete1) I do plan to have a meeting. I figured the blog was a good way to introduce the topic, but we will get face-to-face before anything formal is done. To be honest, I have a LOT to learn myself about this. I have more questions than answers myself.
2) My goal is not really to become bigger, but rather be able to do more. I agree with the last post, that I love being structured the way we are now. I really don't want to see that change.
3) If this goes as planned, the RMEC really will not change how we interact and organize runs. It should however give us the ability to host "fun runs" and races which I think is key to helping our the community.
In short, this is really not about changing our club. I think our club can really help Rocky Mount, much like the Half Marathon did. I would love to see some new events in town. . . 5ks, kid triathlons, etc. but the RMEC can not pull it off without a parent organization.
Please continue to post your comments, even if you have a different opinion. That is the only way we make this work. If the silent majority disagrees, I need to know.
Thanks!
I look forward to the meeting, to discuss and hear about all the pros/cons that may be involved.
ReplyDeleteHaving said that, I do support this idea. I think it's a step in the right direction towards a common goal that we all share!
I have heard Michael talk about this in the past and I know liability has always been a concern.
ReplyDeleteI support the dues.
great idea. count us (my family in) but it probably needs to be a little higher fee.
ReplyDeleteGood plan! And I have wondered who paid for the fluids, etc. on these supported runs in the past...Michael, that would probably be you and Ursula? Anyway, I'd suggest set the dues to cover these expenses.
ReplyDeleteAs far as the concern about the club becoming too impersonal, it is my humble opinion that is unlikely because of how it has been founded. The fact that Michael and Ursula have set the tone by doing TONS for no reimbursement and all levels of athletes are involved I believe has created the essence of this club. Maybe I'm a Pollyanna but I believe any new members will catch the spirit from those already established.
