Late Summer Race Results

I wanted to take a quick minute to share some race results from the end of summer. I am sure there are other races that I have missed, so please feel free to email me when you are racing, and I will do my best to get it on the blog.

Trail Run Challenge: The Forrester family decided to take advantage of a trail race during our summer vacation. The Trail Run Challenge was held at the US National Whitewater Center in Charlotte. The entire race took place on their mountain bike trails. Michael ran the 10k and took 2nd in his age group with a time of 47:00. Ursula paced Henry in the 5k to a 41:19. Caroline was not far behind finishing in 50:57 and taking 3rd in her age group. It was a fun race at a great venue.

Gold's Gym Waterpark 5k: This Greenville 5k is in it's 13 year and has a fast course when the summer heat backs off. Ashley Bass took full advantage and clocked an amazing 17:01 to win the race outright! You read that right. . . 52 year old Ashley ran a 17:01. Ashley edged out 55 year old Phillip Rowan of Greenville who set the state age group record during the race. Wayne Painter of the RMEC took 10th overall posting a 19:33 (6:17 pace). This was strong enough for second place in his age group. This really was a very impressive race with two of the top masters runners in the state on display. Great job everyone! Complete results are available online.

Greenville-Pitt County 8k: A new race on the calendar this year is the Greenville 8k. Derek Hurdle has been going through a tough summer training regiment as he prepares for the Blue Ridge Relay and the Steamtown Marathon. He decided to test the legs in the 8k and had a strong showing. His finishing time of 33:11 (6:41 pace) was strong enough for 12th overall and second in his age group. Well done Derek! Complete results are available online.

Medoc Meltdown a BIG Success!

We had a crowd of almost 25 runners at the Harris Teeter for a normal group run on Saturday. While our group was preparing to hit the flat paved roads an even larger group of runners were poised to take on the trails at Medoc Mountain State Park.

The 3rd Annual Medoc Meltdown was helped on Saturday, August 28th, and was an enormous success. This years race brought out the biggest crowd ever for the "fat ass" style run. In total 44 people ran the trails. Not to mention Frank Lilley and Cameron Kelly were on hand to host the event. As typical of the Medoc Meltdown it provides a self guided tour of the upcoming Medoc Trail Races. People run anywhere from one to four loops of the race course. Here is how things broke down for 2010.

  • 13 Runners completed 8.6 Miles
  • 10 Runners completed 17.2 Miles
  • 7 Runners completed 25.8 Miles
  • 14 Runners completed 34.4 Miles (full Meltdown)
This is by far the most runners that have ever completed the full ultra distance. Laura MacLean was the overall winner with a time of 5:56. Laura is also the defending champion of he Medoc Trail Marathon.

From the RMEC, Ron Fleming covered 25.8 miles in 4:50. Ted Lord and Ralph Willey completed 17.2 miles in 2:53 and 3:41 respectively. Eric Seale and Jeanie Kerr completed the 8.6 mile loop in 1:46 and 1:57 respectively. Both Eric and Jeannie are training for their first Medoc Trail 10-Miler.

Congrats to all finishers and thanks to the outstanding organizers. To view photos from the event check out Frank's Flicker Page.

RUN RSVP: Saturday 8/28 @ 6:00 am

First and foremost, if you are able, please join Frank and many RMEC members at the Medoc Meltdown tomorrow morning. This is a great opportunity to run some fun trails with lots of fun people. I anticipate 40+ runners will be on hand.

For those of you that can't make it to Medoc, or those that need to stay on the roads, we will still have a group run from the Teeter. According to our long run schedule, we will have a 4, 9, and 13 miles run options. This is a "recovery week" on the plan which is why the runs are all shorter. I know several of you are planning to go longer, so adjust the routes to meet your needs. I had a 10 and 13 mile route that shared the same roads, so the nine-mile run was increased slightly.

Run Details:

We will actually not run Candlewood tomorrow! The routes head out the opposite direction that we normally do. The first fluid stop will be at my house. The second stop will be at Co-Ah-Bar, and the third will be a water fountain at City Lake. If anyone can help with fluids at Co-Ah-Bar, please post a comment. Please note, the 4-mile route will not pass a fluid stop, so bring your own if you need it (sorry about that!).

The weather forecast is fantastic! It will be 64F at 6:00 am, and only 68F at 8:00 am. Enjoy the cooler weather, but don't forget to arrive hydrated and stay hydrated. Please RSVP below with your pace and distance. When setting up two fluid stops having an exact headcount is a big help.

Master's Swim Class Update

Eric heard from Yvonne at the YMCA today. They are going to try the Tuesday/Thursday master's swim class at lunch. There should be paperwork on it available at the front desk now. The way it will work is that the usual master's class fee of $15.00 per month will apply and you will be able to attend any two of the classes offered - either Monday 6AM, Tuesday 12:15PM, Wednesday 6AM, Thursday 12:15PM. The class will be an hour, ending at 1:15PM - but of course that will be variable depending on every one's lunch schedule and time available.

The Tuesday/Thursday schedule will start on Thursday, September 2.

Please help to get the word out. I realize that not everyone will be able to attend every week/class, but regular attendance is needed for the YMCA to see value in continuing at this time.
