Frank's 100

If you have not heard the news, Frank will attempt to cover 100 miles on foot this weekend. He will begin Saturday morning at 7:00 a.m. and repeat a 5-mile loop that comes by the Harris Teeter on each loop (note, Frank will start from his house on Jeramey, not at the Harris Teeter).

If anyone has time to join him for some of this it would be very appreciated. In particular Saturday afternoon/evening, and Sunday morning will be where he needs the most help. Try to make it out there twice if you can. If you are driving by on the weekend, swing by the "loop" and see how he is doing. Anything at all would be appreciated.

If you plan to help, please post a comment ASAP so Frank will know when to look for you, and he can identify gaps during his run. It also lets others know where those gaps are.

Good luck Frank!

Email from Frank:

First, and foremost, let me say "thank you" for your willingness to help me through this adventure. Without a doubt, your being there will be a big mental lift for me and without your help and the other pacers, my chances for success would be greatly diminished.

Second, let me apologize! I'm likely to NOT be in such a great mood when I see you out there. PLEASE . . . don't think for a minute I don't appreciate your being there! It's just that as the miles build up, one's mind just doesn't work all that well! It's really strange. But true. So, if I'm uncommunicative, seem distracted, rude (I hope I'm never that!), please forgive me.

Your probably wondering what you need to do to help . . . First, just being there is a huge help. You may not realize it . . . but I will! Probably I will just want communication! Just to talk! But I may be "mentally" shut-down and quiet is called for. But you can't make any mistakes here. Just do and say what you think is appropriate!

Don't expect to be getting your daily exercise! I'll be going slow . . . very, very slow. Walk / Run intervals. And as the time goes on, there will be more and more walking and less and less running!

This will likely take me 30 hours . . . or even more. Do the math . . . that is a pace of about 17 minutes per mile. I will probably be a tad faster just so I can take a short nap in the early morning hours if necessary.

My route will be a 5 mile route and will pass by Harris Teeter and my house on Jeremy Lane. I'll have a mini-aid station setup there. One thing you can do is help me get through the aid station fairly quickly. As I mentioned, my mind will turn to mush, and I'll have trouble making decisions. In the later hours I'll need more and more help! Ask me what I want. Make suggestions:
  • We need to fill up your fluid. Gatorade? Water? Coke? Mt Dew?"
  • You need to eat. How about PB&J? etc.
  • Remind me to take electrolytes.

If I tell you I'm quitting, here is my plan: finish at least 5 more miles before I decide. Then, if I still want to quit, I'm going to take a 30-45 nap. Then, try walking again. If I still want to quit, well, I'll quit! If I do quit, I'll contact everyone left so you will know.

I have attached a map of my route. As you can imagine, I really don't have a set schedule, but I do have sort of a plan:

  • 7:00 - Start
  • 8:26:00 AM - Mile 5
  • 9:52:00 AM - Mile 10
  • 11:18:00 AM - Mile 15
  • 12:44:00 PM - Mile 20
  • 2:10:00 PM - Mile 25
  • 3:36:00 PM - Mile 30
  • 5:02:00 PM - Mile 35
  • 6:28:00 PM - Mile 40
  • 7:54:00 PM - Mile 45
  • 9:20:00 PM - Mile 50
  • 10:46:00 PM - Mile 55
  • 12:12:00 AM - Mile 60
  • 1:38:00 AM - Mile 65
  • 3:04:00 AM - Mile 70
  • 4:30:00 AM - Mile 75
  • 5:56:00 AM - Mile 80
  • 7:22:00 AM - Mile 85
  • 8:48:00 AM - Mile 90
  • 10:14:00 AM - Mile 95
  • 11:40:00 AM - Mile 100

Not sure the best way to find me. I will carry my cell phone (252-904-8697) so calling me might be a good idea. Also, you might try driving the course backwards! But each lap will likely take just under 1:30!! SLOW!

Again, thank you for helping me through this. Hopefully, I'll be successful. But even if I fail to complete the full 100 miles, I will have given it my best shot.

Race Shirt Collection

Members of First United Methodist Church are collecting t-shirts for Africa. This is an actual mission trip with Rocky Mount locals going to Africa, so the shirts will be hand delivered. Kinnie has already given them a bag of shirts from herself and her boys. I know the RMEC has tons of race shirts that might be crowding your dresser drawer. This is a great way to get rid of them.

You can either drop them at the welcome center of First United Methodist Church, or if you prefer, get in touch with Kinnie, and she can arrange a way to pick them up. They are leaving on April 5th, so we need to move quickly to get them turned in.

Raleigh Rocks Results

A few RMEC members snuck up to Raleigh on Saturday to race in the Raleigh Rocks Half Marathon. The temperatures had plummeted overnight, so they had near freezing temperatures to start the race. With two new North Carolina half/full marathons the weekend before, the race had a 22% drop in finishers, but still a solid crowd of 1,173 posted times.

Ralph Willey cracked the two hour mark, and ran an impressive 1:59:54. This was good enough for 4th in his age group. He only missed placing in the top three by 29 seconds! Misty Schmitt ran a strong 2:06:21. This knocked more than seven minutes off her time in last years race. I am not 1005 certain, but I think this is another big PR for Misty. Great job!

As a reminder, please let us know when you are racing so we can update the blog. "Good races" or "bad races", it is still an accomplishment and something worth sharing.

RUN RSVP: Saturday March 26

What a crazy weekend of weather. Right now it is sunny and mid-60s, but the forecast has the temps dropping all the way to 29 by 7:00 am! What the heck is going on!!?? I don't want to change the normal 7:00 am start time, but I expect some of you would prefer to run later in the afternoon. If you are not going to run at 7:00, but will be running this weekend, post a comment so people will know.

Run Details:

We may soon be starting some Wednesday evening running groups too. These might be hill repeats or speed workouts. I will post some details shortly.

What is a Workout?

A workout is 25 percent perspiration and 75 percent determination. Stated another way, it is one part physical exertion and three parts self-discipline. A workout makes you better today than you were yesterday. It strengthens the body, relaxes the mind and toughens the spirit. When you work out regularly, your problems diminish and your confidence grows.

A workout is a personal triumph over laziness and procrastination. It’s the badge of a winner – the mark of an organized, goal oriented person who has taken charge of his or her destiny. A workout is a wise use of time and an investment in excellence. It is a way of preparing for life’s challenges and proving to yourself that you have what it takes to do what is necessary.

A workout is a key that helps unlock the door to opportunity and success. Hidden within each of us is an extraordinary force. Physical and mental fitness are the triggers that can release it. A workout is a form of rebirth.

When you finish a good workout, you don’t simply feel better, you feel better about yourself.

RACE REPORT: Tobacco Road Marathon

Submitted by: Brian Lankford

Note: Brian sent this email to Frank Lilley, when he asked him "How did it really go"

It was a good day. In fact it turned out to be a great day. I just didn't know what was in store for me when I was standing there with you in the starting choral. It could very well have been a very miserable and demoralizing experience.

13 weeks ago I started my official marathon training with Ashley "Smoke" Bass. I made it to the point of a 16 mile long run when the neuroma became unbearable. That was the end of my marathon training and the beginning of the alcohol injections. I could still do the typical 5k training and speed work and run the 5k races in the Spring Series that is going on now. I just couldn't do a long run. After 8 weeks of injections, the neuroma seemed to be pretty much "sclerosed". Ashley and I figured that I had paid my entry fee, I had a hotel reservation and I had run 16 miles once, so what the heck.

We decided I should go out at a 7:30 pace and try to hold it for the 16 miles that I had run 8 weeks before. After that point I would just hang on and try to get to the finish by 3:30 and qualify for Boston.

I made it to mile 16 at a 7:30 pace then 17 then 18. I knew I was 9 minutes ahead of the 3:30 goal. At mile 19 I began to realize I was running a marathon. At mile 20 and 21 I knew I was running a marathon. At mile 22 and 23 I was having my ass handed to me by a marathon.

I was putting forth an incredible effort with very little results. I was beginning to appreciate the whole marathon experience. I knew I only had 3 miles left but I was at a point in my running career that I had never experienced before. I was tired, damn tired, I mean I just wanted to move forward with a semblance of a running motion. I was running just to reach the next mile marker and so happy to go past it. I honestly remembered what you said in the starting choral about "you will not quit, you will just keep moving forward". The last couple of miles seemed to take forever and I got a little frustrated because the mile markers seemed to take so long to come into view. I never got a "second wind" or any kind of kick at the end. I just ran!...and ran!...and ran!

I believe that had I been able to get in the recommended number of long runs, my endurance would have been better and maybe I could have kept the 2nd 13.1 time closer to the 1st 13.1 time.

I would say my training got me to 20 miles. Determination and guts got me to 26.2. Do I have more running talent today? Probably not. Do I have more self confidence? Definitely!

So Frank, my answer to your question, "How did it really go?" It went absolutely great!

March 21st Race Results

What a great day for the RMEC! With so many marathon options nearby (five by my count) the third weekend in March has become one of the biggest of the year for North Carolina. The RMEC ended up running the Tobacco Road Marathon, the Wrightsville Beach Marathon, and the Tobacco Road Half Marathon. This was one of the most successful race weekends ever for our club! Check out the results below!

To begin with, 52 year old Ashley Bass smoked his marathon debut at Tobacco Road (pun intended)! Ashley finished with a time of 2:59:34, easily qualifying for Boston, and finishing 16th place overall! This is one of the highest finishes ever for the RMEC. Michael was next across the line with a 3:21:03. With limited training this was a surprising PR by one minute. Brian Lankford was right behind with a 3:23:57. Despite a foot injury, Brian also pulled out a Boston qualifier in his marathon debut! Not to be out done, Dave Lavely finished in 3:26:52. His negative-splits performance earned him the third Boston spot from the RMEC. All four finished in the top 10 of their age groups as well.

Gerry Felton was next from the RMEC to cross the finish line. With a goal of breaking four hours, Gerry was feeling good from his training. When he turned the final corner he knew he had crushed his goal. His finishing time was 3:55:56. Next came Tracy Proctor also trying to break four hours for the first time. With some pacing help from Laura in the last mile, Tracy came in with a 3:59:34!

Laura Haynes also had a heck of a day racing the half marathon posting a strong 2:11:30. Glad she left something in the tank to bring Tracy home! John Clark (aka Teddy Cheetah), ran the Half as well in preparation for the upcoming Eugene Marathon. His finishing time of 1:41:33 placed him 103rd among the nearly 800 men running.

Kevin Boudreau and Scott Wingfield both signed up for the marathon on a whim just days before. Their main motivation was to help pace Gerry to a sub-4:00. The three of them ran most of the race together. Scott managed a 4:05:11 just two weeks after Umstead, and Kevin ran a 4:05:31 (only a minute off his PR), despite only having a 16-mile long run! Great work men! So nice to see the teamwork.

Frank Lilley likes to sell himself short when talking about speed, but don't be fooled. He is faster than he pretends. Sunday helped to prove this when he ran a 5:24:32. This is one of Frank's fastest marathon times in over two years. Not only that, Frank finished in the top 10 in his age group. Way to go Frank! You can check out Frank's race report on his blog. He also has more pictures there as well.

While the Tobacco Road group was enjoying the fruits of our labor, and celebrating the first ever sub-3:00 marathon from the RMEC. . . another race was wrapping up at the beach. Turns out Jeff Hartney and Levi Moore were both racing the Wrightsville Beach Marathon. Levi had another strong performance finishing with a solid 4:20:23. The big shock came when we found out the RMEC now has two sub-3:00 hour marathoners. Not only did Ashley break the 3:00 mark, but Jeff Hartney ran a 2:58:17 and took 8th place overall!

What a great day for everyone. This was not just about BQs, PRs, and times. This was about training partners, friendships, and supporting local racing. We all had a good time. I would highly recommend the RMEC consider the Tobacco Road race next year as a group event. The two out-and-back sections make it an ideal event to enjoy, plus the course is flat and also offers a half option. Great job everyone!

Fall 2010 - Marathon Planning

I know that Spring has not exactly"sprung" yet, but this is normally the time when the RMEC starts making plans for our big fall marathon trip. This way we all get on the same page, and we can try to get some momentum and excitement brewing.

Last year we "caught lightning in a bottle" so to speak with the Marine Corps Marathon. Because the race fills up, we all had to sign up early and were at least financially committed. We ended up with over 20 runners at the race. I find this is normally the best strategy. Once you register, you generally stick with it, and stop looking for excuses not to run. Our biggest groups in the past were Richmond and MCM. Both races required us to sign up early.

Even though the club does not all need to pick the same race, it is far more fun when we have a group going together. So, what marathon/half would you like to run this fall? Below are some suggestions, but please list any race that interests you.

10/31 Marine Corps Marathon (DC)
+ Drivable. Great event. Good family trip. 10k option. 35th Anniversary
- Did it last year. DC is big, so it is hard to meet up with the club. No half option.

11/07 City of Oaks (NC)
+ Drivable. Could sleep in your own bed. Supports local running. Has a half.
- Challenging course. May not feel as "special" racing so close to home.

11/07 New York City Marathon (NY)
+ One of the best races in the world. It's New York!
- Expensive. Extensive travel. Expensive. No half option. No guarantees on getting in. Expensive.

11/13 Richmond Marathon (VA)
+ Drivable. Affordable. Friendly. Half/8k options. Easy for the RMEC to socialize before & after.
- RMEC has done it several times.

10/16 Baltimore Marathon (MD)
+ Drivable. Moderate sized race. 10th anniversary. Half option.
- Mixed reviews. I know little about the race.

10/10 Steamtown Marathon (PA)
+ 90% downhill. PR friendly. Positive reviews
- Far to travel. Downhill is fast, but can kill your quads.

10/30 Ridge to Bridge Marathon (NC)
+ Another downhill marathon. Supports NC running. Very highly reviewed. Great race direction.
- Not really any. . . It is a small event but this is also a positive

11/14 OBX Marathon (NC)
+ Drivable. Good size. Half option. Easy for the RMEC to get together.
- RMEC has done it several times. 2nd half of course is not so great.

PLEASE POST COMMENTS WITH YOUR PLANS.

RUN RSVP: Saturady March 20

Another crowd of RMEC members are racing this weekend, so once again,we may have a smaller crowd at the group run. I hope you will all still considering coming out to the Teeter, and bring your own fluids.

Run Details:

The forecast looks like a perfect day for a run. A little bit of Spring is trying to sneak out, so it should be a great day. Don't miss it. It will be hot before you know it.

Medoc Trail Maintenance Training

At 9:30 AM this Saturday morning, we will meet with Bill Meyer, Medoc Park Superintendant at Medoc Park Headquarters and review his expectations for us. Additionally we will choose trails and we will learn proper techniques for trail maintenance. Quite a number of RMEC members and their families have indicated an interest but if there are additional folks that would like to be involved, everyone is welcome!

Please confirm you interest by sending an e-mail to Frank at: flilley (at) embarqmail (dot) com

If anyone is interested in meeting early for a trail run, please post a comment. If you start at 8:00, you could get in a good 7-10 mile run in advance!

Tobacco and Tar

The blog has been a bit slow lately. Life has been busy, and I have run short on time to post. I will try to get some more regular updates, but strongly encourage you guys to submit anything (race reports, tips, interesting news, results, etc.) for me to post. It helps keep the blog interesting. There are two races coming up the the RMEC is involved with that I wanted to remind everyone about:

Tobacco Road Marathon and Half Marathon: 850 runners have registered for the marathon, and 2,370 have registered for the half. These are great numbers for an inaugural race. Tim, Michael, Gerry, Dave, Tracy, Frank, Brian, and Ashley are all registered for the full, and Laura is racing the half. The race is full, but I still wanted to let the club know about who was racing. The website says they will be posting results during the race on Sunday, so you may be able to follow us online.

Tar Heel 10 Miler and 4 Miler: This April 10, Chapel Hill race has a cap of 2,000 runners, and only has 80 spots remaining. All 10 M finishers get a medal which is a nice perk. Currently Kelly, Arthur, Michael D, Ron, Laura, Michael, Ursula, Leigh Ann, Scott, Jon, and Amber are racing the 10M. Robin and Charlotte will also be racing in the 4M. I still think this could be a great road trip for our club if anyone is interested. It can be a great training race for those building up miles, and just something fun and different to try. You actually finish by running around the football field. I expect the last 80 spots will be gone before Friday.

RACE RESULTS: Princess Half Marathon

The ladies of the RMEC returned from sunny Florida Monday evening proudly wearing their newly earned "Tiara Medals". To begin with, Tracy H, Patti, Ursula, and Jeannie all ran the Royal Family 5k on Saturday morning. All four ladies had on a "princess gown" that matched their favorite princess. The weather was cold, but all had a great time. Jeannie completed her first 5k race! Congrats to everyone.

On Sunday, things got more serious. . . well, as serious as a race can be where you run through a castle, and see characters every mile! Ursula is known for snapping non-stop pictures in a Disney race, and stopping for every character possible. This time she took a new approach, and decided to see just how fast she could run a half marathon. Turns out she can run one pretty darn fast! She knocked six minutes off her previous PR finishing in 1:58:49. This was good enough for 842nd place out of 10,902 runners! I am so proud of you sweetie!

Tracy and Patti made sure they had enough pictures to make up for Ursula not taking any. The two ladies stopped for over 40 pictures, and still managed to post an impressive 2:21:13 finishing time. I look forward to seeing all of the photos from the weekend, and hope you all will consider a race report. Congratulations to everyone! Full results are
available online.

RMEC Survives Another Umstead Marathon

The RMEC sent six members to participate in the Umstead Trail Marathon this year. Unlike 2009, the weather was just about perfect for a great race. That being said, even cooler temperatures does not make Umstead flat.

Scott Wingfield was the first from the RMEC to finish in a time of 4:35:45. This was a four minute improvement over last year, and just felt like a better race to Scott. Seven places behind Scott was Ron Flemming with a time 4:43:47. This was an impressive debut for Umstead. Also making his Umstead debut was Eric Pate who came in just nine spots behind Ron with a time 4:49:17. All three were able to celebrate with their Moe's Burrito after the race.

Amber Poole and Jon Shingleton were also running Umstead for the first time. Sometimes life gets in the way, and our race training takes a back seat. . . so was the case with Amber and Jon. With limited longs runs, it would have been easy to scratch on running the Umstead Marathon, but both took on the challenge and did very well. Amber finished in 153rd with a time of 5:32:04. One place behind was Jon in 5:37:09. Great job guys!

Frank Lilley was a bit worried about the cut off time at Umstead. This is a race where they will ask you to leave the course if you cannot reach cutoffs at specified times. Last year, Frank was proud to say he was the last official finisher. This year was a different story. . . Frank finished in 5:54:42, and beat four other runners! Great job Frank! To read Frank's race report, check out his blog.

This race is a challenge, but is full of great volunteers and personal touches. I would love to see 20+ from the RMEC sign up next year. It is the most fun you can have while torturing yourself. By the way, Jim Micheels of Raleigh Running Outfitters cracked the top 15 to take home the final award.

RUN RSVP: Saturday, March 6

With ten RMEC members racing this weekend, I am not sure how big of a crowd to expect at the group run. I hope you will all still considering coming out to the Teeter. Remember, if you decide to skip this weekend. . . you can't get that run back!

Run Details:

  • Where: Saturday, 7:00 am @ Harris Teeter
  • Supported: TBD (Can anyone help?)
  • Weather: Forecast
  • Routes: 6.67 Miles

Tomorrow is a day to use layers. It will be 31 at 7:00 a.m., but will warm up to mid 40s by 10:00 a.m. Depending how long you are running, you may end up dropping layers during the run. I have both kids solo this weekend, so I am not able to get by and drop off fluids. If anyone can help, please post a comment. Otherwise, it is BYOG.

I went with the standard 6.67 mile loop. I know it is not exciting, but several people are running 20 (myself included), and this sets up well for the aid station, and is also easy to shorten as needed. See you in the morning!

Also . . . "break a leg" Steve Cooper who is starring as Cogsworth in Beauty in the Beast tonight!

Good Luck to "The Princess and the Frog"

This weekend the RMEC has several people racing at two different locations. It is kind of funny actually, because the races could not be more different. One group is running as "princesses" through the world of Disney Magic with thousands of other runners, while the other group is running trails and climbing multiple one mile hills with a group of a few hundred.

Umstead Marathon: On Saturday, Frank, Ron, Scott, Amber, Jon, and Eric will take on the challenge that is known as the Umstead Marathon. This is 26.2 miles of hills, fun, hills, beauty, and hills. As flat-landers in Rocky Mount, we quickly discovered how much hills can wear you down in 2009. If you missed it, here is my race report from last year (
To Hill and Back). Even though the course is a real challenge, it is a great event and one I hope all the of RMEC will try before they hang up their racing shoes. Good luck to everyone in 2010. Looks like the weather will be MUCH improved over last year!

Princess Half Marathon: On Sunday, a group of Rocky Mount ladies are heading back to sunny Orlando to race in the Princess Half Marathon. Of course, you can't go all the way to Disney and just do one race. . . so they will also run the Royal Family 5k on Saturday. Ursula, Patti, Tracy H, and their friend Jeannie will all run the 5k. They have picked out their favorite princess "gowns" to race in, and then plan to visit the parks immediately after. I can hardly wait to see the pictures! The next day, Ursula, Patti, and Tracy H will get up while it is still dark and run the half marathon, while Jeannie volunteers to help with the race. The girls will still be having fun, but I expect some more serious running attire on this day. Good luck ladies!

Two NEW 5ks!

There are two new 5k races in our neighboring cities that I wanted to make the RMEC aware of. Both are on the same day, but it is actually possible to run them both if you were interested.

  • 05/08 Whirlirun 5k - This 5k raises money to benefit Buddy Ball, Wilson's program for disabled children to enjoy baseball. It has been a while since Wilson has had a local race, so this one might draw a decent size crowd. The race begins at 8:00 a.m.
  • 05/05 Bright Night 5k - The new 5k is to celebrate Emily Bright and raise awareness of ovarian cancer. The evening race begins at 7:30 p.m. from Moe’s Southwest Grill and runs through the Lynndale neighborhood of Greenville, NC. Runners will all wear glow bracelets to stay visible in the dark. Should be a fun event.

I know many from the RMEC are racing at White Lake that weekend, and other do not normally race 5ks, but I did want to make sure you were aware of these opportunities. Local races need support from local runners to be successful. Please help spread the word.

RMEC in the News

Tracy Proctor recently spoke with Caroline Charm Magazine about the RMEC and the benefits of running to women. Caroline Charm is a division of the Rocky Mount Telegram. It is a great piece and will hopefully encourage more runners to get active, and more inactive people to become runners. Check it out online.

Thanks Tracy for taking the time to speak to Caroline Charm. . . for motivating other women and children to run. . . and for representing the Rocky Mount Endurance Club. Great job!

Runners Beware!

Knowing that the RMEC runs through MLK Richard forwarded this story to several of us yesterday. In Richard's words, "And I thought the wildest thing running out there with you guys was Frank"

Animal Control Call: Officers were notified that an ostrich was loose in Martin Luther King Park running towards the cemetery on E. Virginia St. Officers responded and observed the bird in the cemetery. The bird, identified as an emu, eluded capture, running through traffic, until it was located behind the State Employee's Credit Unit on Fairview Road. Animal Control, along with assistance from officers, was able to capture the bird. The bird was transported to the Animal Shelter on N. Church Street. Below is a photo of the emu.

Canal Race Packet Stuffing

Hello RMEC. Next week I will be stuffing race packets for the Canal Half Marathon and 8k. Most likely there will be 400 packets, so I could use your help. I only need about 5-6 volunteers to make it work. If I get too many people, it can actually slow us down.

I should have everything (shirts, bags, numbers, pins, samples, etc.) by Wednesday if all goes as planned. We will use the main building at RBC like we have in the past. I would like to start at 5:45. The backup plan is to do it Thursday. If anyone can help, please post a comment.

Really looking forward to making this a great event, and appreciate any help I can get. Thanks in advance!

Also, if you plan to run the Half Marathon and have not registered, there are only 10 spots left.
