RUN RSVP: Saturday 11/24

You can't slow down now! You all have a half marathon just two weeks away. Don't get lazy. Come out and run with the group. I have selected a 9 mile route for this weekend. I know some of you may do more, but if you are running the First Carolina State Bank Half, you should at least be doing nine. This is the distance that was planned based on the Hal Higdon Training Plan. If you want to do more, add on after getting a drink at the Teeter.

Run Details:

  • Day: Saturday @ 8:30 a.m.
  • Where: Harris Teeter
  • Route: 9 miles
  • Supported: No - Only a water fountain near mile 3.
  • Weather: Forecast
This route is different than what we normally do, but was well liked the one time we ran it. Be sure to bring the written directions if you are not familiar with the route. Also be careful on the short stretch of Old Mill and Bethlehem.

If a small group ends up running, someone is welcome to shove fluids in my mailbox (mile 5.5). I will not be able to run Saturday morning.

I did start this run at 8:30 am. I figure for a holiday weekend we cool weather, more people may show up if they get 30 extra minutes of sleep. Remember, next week we will have a group run on the half marathon course. Tell a friend!

26.2 Stickers and Magnets

Some of you are now proud new members of the 26.2 club and the 13.1 club. If you would like to have a sticker for your car, it might be good for someone to order several so you all don't pay shipping. Bay Six USA is the main manufacturer. They sell 26.2 oval magnets for $5.00, 26.2 oval decals for $2.50, and a variety of running stickers for $1.00. In fact some others may want to order a different sticker.

If you plan to order, post a message here. If you are willing to place an order for others let us know. This should be a pretty easy group buy, because all items are cheap.
You can also pick these up at Raleigh Running Outfitters if someone is making a trip there soon.

More November Results

Philly: The day after many of use did the Turkey Trot, Patti was running her second fall marathon. After a blazing hot Chicago, Patti was hopping for something with cooler temperatures. Well. . . The Philadelphia Marathon was very cold, a bit windy, and even had rain. Patti still had an exceptional race. Her finishing time was 4:09:19. Not a PR for Patti, but I believe he second best marathon performance. This is also Patti's third marathon for 2007. Great job Patti!

Turkey Trot: I had asked to have race results sent to me, but so far nothing has shown up. Just in case I never see the results, use the comment section here to report your race time if you know it. I will start to update the RMEC Results page with the times you list.

Turkey Trot Photos

Lots of fun today at the Turkey Trot. Counting kids, we probably had over 30 runners. It was great to see so many people from the RMEC out there. Hopefully we can pick up some new runners to join us. If you are new to this blog, keep coming back. We try to organize runs virtually every Saturday. Everyone is welcome!

Here is a direct link to the Turkey Trot pictures. If you want to view various running pictures, go to the main directory. Enjoy!

Filling the Void: Comments Request!

Lots of you right now are probably feeling a small void in your life. It might be a good thing. You have just spent four to five months focusing on a goal. You have now reached that goal, and are wondering what you can do to fill that space that was once filled with marathon training. Hopefully you are still running, but it might not feel the same. This is not uncommon after a marathon. It is especially true after a fall marathon. The days are shorter. The weather is colder. You are not outside as much. It all adds up.

I have been asked by lots of you about a late winter or a spring marathon. So that is the point of this post. What comes next for everyone? You are of course welcome to pick your own races, or not race at all, but if you still have that urge (or maybe you just think you can still do better) lets see what people plan to do next. Races are always more fun as a group. Here are some marathon options that all have a half marathon as well. All races are within driving distance:

NOTE: Vote in the poll I just added. You are welcome to change your vote based on how others are voting, just don't vote from multiple computers for yourself.

  • FL 01/27 ING Miami Marathon: This is a well sponsored fast growing race. The size is slightly smaller than Richmond. The course is flat, and Miami is a nice destination.
  • GA 02/02 Tybee Island Marathon: This is a small race with good reviews. The course is a loop course, giving many opportunities to see your teammates. 1,200 total finishers last year (80% in the half)
  • SC 02/16 Myrtle Beach Marathon: A flat beach course, that can be cold and windy. 1,700 marathon finishers and 2,400 half marathon finishers last year. Lower cost and close by.
  • FL 02/17 26.2 with Donna: The National Marathon to Fight Breast Cancer: A new race that has been heavily promoted. Expect a big crowd. Has a really cool looking course map (check it out), with two miles on the sand. Looks like fun.
  • GA 03/01 Snickers Energy Bar Marathon: 2nd year for this small race. Year one had great reviews. 500 total finishers, with easy access from the hotels.
  • VA 03/16 Shamrock Marathon: A popular spring race at Virginia Beach. If you like the beach, it is close and affordable. Shares some roads as the RnR Half. Can be cold.
  • DC 03/29 National Marathon: Has become a great alternative to the Marine Corp. Scenic course with less crowds (about 5,000 total). They have a team competition too. Fun stuff for the family to do in DC.

There are other races that you can consider as well, but I thought these were good options. Each race above is a link to the race website. Having a half marathon on each race makes it so we really could take a crowd and have a good time.

I was going to do a poll for this, but I think using comments is better. Please post a comment if you plan to run something. If you are willing to go with more than one choice, let us know what they are. This post is open to comments from EVERYONE. Even if you are reading the blog for the first time. Just be sure to include your name so we know who you are.

Good Luck Runners!

For the third weekend in row, the RMEC has someone racing in a marathon. Patti will be running the Philadelphia Marathon on Sunday. This race is sure to be a different experience when compared to Chicago, with very cool temperatures expected. We look forward to seeing how Patti performs!

Of course the RMEC will also be racing locally. Lots of people are planning on doing the Turkey Trot. As a result, there will not be a group run from the Hariss Teeter. I am probably am missing several names, but I believe Brent, Ursula, Ryan, Tracy, Russ, Jeff, Eric, Heather, Arthur, Caroline, Henry, Andy, myself and others are running. Add your name if I am missing you.

If you are in town, come out and join the fun. Consider it a reunion run. Be sure to wear your RMEC shirts! Ursula printed up some cards with our blog address on them, so feel free to grab a few to give out. We are just trying to get the word out about the RMEC.

I will have a banner for the Half Marathon and applications to pass out at the race. Do your best to encourage people to sign up.

Settling Up on Shirts: UPDATED

I need to get the technical shirts distributed and settled up. I am going by my notes, and it is VERY possible that you have given me payment and I forgot to mark you off. So this is not a "naughty" list. I have given them out so many different times, that I do not always have my list with me. Plus, I have collected for the original order too. This is where I THINK I stand. Please correct me if I am wrong!

  • Derek - need $17.85 for L White Long
  • Kinnie - need $17.85 for L White Long
  • Jenni - I have your M White Long

I just want to get this taken care of before the holidays start, and we see each other even less. There are still some sack packs left and also some black cotton tees if your are interested.
