Been a very bust couple of weeks. I wanted to catch up on a few race results that I know about. I expect more of you have run some races this summer that I am missing. Please let me know when you race so we can share your success with the group. I want to keep the blog active and current, but am short on time right now. Thanks!
Boogie 50 Miler:
Frank once again decide to take on the challenge of the Boogie Moonlight Marathon. After past years of getting his butt kicked by the hot, humid, and hilly marathon he changed his approach. . . He signed up for the 50-mile ultra. On a day that saw 30% of runners not finish, Frank pushed on and completed yet another ultra.
Susan Komen 5k:
In mid June, Jeanette Batchelor ran in the Susan G. Komen 5k in Raleigh, NC. This is one of the largest 5k events in North Carolina. Jeanette ran a 27:53 which earned her 63rd our 313 in her age group. An impressive time, especially considering the amount of runners to navigate in the race. A total of 3,051 finished the race.
Running of the Bulls 8k:
Three RMEC members were up at 4:00 am to drive to Durham two weekends ago. Ron, Scott and Michael all were racing in the "Running of the Bulls 8k". Kind of a last minute decision. The race was great. Nice shirts, cool (but hilly) course, beer at the finish, finish in a baseball stadium, and a very competitive field. Ron Fleming took 33rd over all with a 31:27 (6:20 pace). Michael was next to round the warning track taking 50th with a time of 33:07, and Scott Wingfield came in with a 36:16 taking 106th.
This was a state championship event with cash prizes. This means the top of the field were an impressive group. In total 726 people finished the race. Ron was ready to leave after the race saying, "I didn't get an award. There were lots of people in front of me." We decided to sip or beer and hang out a bit longer. Good thing we did. . . Ron took first in his age group and won a pretty cool cowbell.
Three Little Pigs Tri:
This sprint triathlon is held in Smithfield, NC. Each year this event has grown in popularity, and in size. Mary Whitwell took 28th overall with a total time of 1:18:04. Mary continues to be ageless in every race she completes. As always the case, no one in first through 27th is older than Mary. In fact the average age of the finisher's in front of her is 17 years younger.
Carol Dickens took 93rd overall with an overall time of 1:37:46. This strong performance earned her 3rd place in her age group. Andy Barker finished in 1:29:10 giving Andy 2nd place in a very close age group. 1st place was only 17 seconds in front of him, and 3rd place was only 34 seconds behind.

Wilson Whirlirun 5K
Wilson does not have a grand history of fantastic races, but they seem to have found a good one with the Whirlirun. This is a fun, family friendly 5k that benefits W.C.Y.A.A.’s Batter‐Up Buddy Ball program. The Batter‐up Buddy Ball is designed to give disabled children in the community the opportunity to enjoy the great game of baseball in a positive environment.
This year several RMEC members decided to race. We were forunate to get a break in the heat, and had near perfect weather to race. . . well, as perfect as you can get in June. The RMEC took half of the top three in the race. Carolyn was the third female finihser with a time of 24:34. John Batchelor took second overall with a 17:59, breaking 18:00 for the first time. Ron Fleming hung with John the enitre race and finished in thrid place with an impressive 18:10.
Below are the results for the RMEC.

Your Pace and the Heat
The following is from Jeff Galloway. This is very important information to consider and I repost it every year as a reminder to both new and experienced runners. As the heat rises you simply must adjust your expectations. This not only applies to racing, but also to training. You cannot run your favorite training route on two different days and expect the same results when one day is 20 degrees hotter.
The hot and sticky days of summer are here. Make sure that you are making some adjustments in your running. Most runners begin to slow down at 55 degrees and start suffering at 65 degrees. Of course, the body can adapt to heat stress and push the threshold up a bit, but you usually can't run as fast on a 75 degree day as on a 45 degree one. High humidity is also a major problem. It's like a wet blanket; it doesn't allow much evaporation or perspiration and your body heat builds up.
If you try to run too hard in hot or humid conditions you'll hit "the wall" sooner than expected. Trying to maintain a goal pace in heat is like going out too fast early in the race. Temperatures generally increase hour by hour; therefore you must adjust your pace for the temperature expected at the end of the race.

- 8 minute mile becomes...
- 55-60 degrees - 1% - 8:05
- 60-65 degrees - 3% - 8:15
- 65-70 degrees - 5% - 8:25
- 70-75 degrees - 7% - 8:35
- 75-80 degrees - 12% - 8:58
- 80-85 degrees - 20% - 9:35
- Above 85 degrees - Forget it... run for fun*
